Do You Plan a New Year's Resolution or, Like Me, a Personal Revolution?

Updated: Jan 6

I’ve opted for the latter, and here’s why.

A resolution is a decision to do or not do something. When people ask, "What’s your New Year’s resolution?" we often come up with something we’ll try to achieve often involving doing more, eating differently, or stopping something. All require willpower that's likely to ebb in the dark days and long nights of January, setting ourselves up to fail.

I ditched this failure-inducing habit some years ago, opting for a softer approach: a personal revolution. So, what is a personal revolution, you ask? It’s about a change in attitude towards things and people around me. Based on values, my personal revolutions have had a dramatic and wide-reaching impact on who I am, what I do, my personal resilience, and the impact I have. Unlike a resolution, a revolution takes time, involves trial and error, accepts failure, and celebrates success, requiring acceptance and tolerance.

So, how do you achieve a personal revolution? The way I do this at the start of the New Year is to choose a word or maybe two to live by. These are usually words that I hope to see in others, and by choosing them, I consider that I will accentuate these values in myself. Integrity, kindness, and good grace are a few that have stayed with me through the years as I choose my new words.

Last year, I chose something different. I was going through what felt a difficult time, particularly at work, knowing that my role and place in the NHS was coming to an end through a restructure. Although I chose voluntary redundancy, it felt far from that and with the redundancy, it seemed that my identity as a nurse in the NHS was ending. So, I chose self-care. I realised that unless I was at my best, I could not continue to help, support, or just be there for others. I have used the year to be integral to who I am, be kind to myself, and show myself good grace as I made decisions along the way. And it has worked. Starting by sitting, reading and enjoying the moment, usually in the garden, along with some pampering sessions I soon felt ready to inquire, learn, see what else is happening that had been previously beyond my vision and reflect upon what I have done, and what else I might do. So, I am ready and set. Tomorrow I will be sharing my 2025 personal revolution, so watch this space …………..
