Tuesdays Tumble; So... What is better?

Blog 5 | So… What is Better?

“Better is not always in line with the agenda, policies or protocols.” (1) Ethel Carboni Jardim | LinkedIn

And better is not always what we assume it is.

It’s individual.

It’s personal.

It’s variable, shaped by what’s happening, what’s felt, what’s needed.

It might be one of many things:

Safe.

Happy.

Secure.

Connected.

Belonging.

Needed.

Able.

Content.

Loved… I could go on.

Everyone I’ve worked with, talked to, listened to in health and care strives to achieve holistic, personalised care.

But maybe that’s the heart of the issue: delivery.

In delivery, do we make assumptions?

You come to me with a problem.

I work out what’s causing it.

I offer one or more possible solutions.

But by then, has the ‘problem’ been medicalised?

Made clinical?

Turned into something that needs to be rectified?

If so, by the time we get to ‘solve’ it, have we forgotten to focus on what is better?

So I suppose we have to ask:

Can we still focus on achieving better by the time people seek us out—ask for support, care, or help?
