Tuesdays Tumble; The Naivety of Care

Blog 2:

Of course, maybe like many entering caring roles, I came into nursing with a certain degree of naivety. I thought care was about doing the right thing, being nice and kind. Following the routines. Striving to make people better.

But I remember, even early in my career, questioning what we were doing and why. Was it the right thing? Were there different ways?

“Better is different for everyone. The best thing for most people isn't to use our services at all, but to have their illness prevented so they don't get sick in the first place. It is strange to think of when we are focused on providing our own specific service.” Emma Snow

But the system had been set in motion long before I joined. Pedalling the opposite way sometimes felt hard, exhausting even!

But care isn’t just about what the system has to offer. It’s about what people need before they ever reach us, to live their lives in ways that work for them.

So yes, I was naïve. But maybe that naivety was a kind of hope. A belief that care could change things.

And it can. There is always hope.

So what does that look like.

If not through more services, is it through more imagination?

If not through doing more, is it through doing different things?

What are your thoughts, experiences, or stories?

I'd love to hear from you....
